Game: The Adventures of Sir Duckington
The Adventures of Sir Duckington is a playful and vibrant platformer accompanied by a short poem about the power of imagination. It was made as part of the Fall 2021 DeSales University ACM Chapter Game Jam over the course of one week. The game was awarded first place. The theme for the jam was “We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.”
For this game, I experimented with a more unconventional art style. Drawing from my childhood love of I Spy books, many of the game’s assets are comprised of free-use stock images meant to evoke the same feeling as the photographs in the I Spy series. To add to this childlike atmosphere, I also made strong use of line art with a hand-drawn texture reminiscent of doodles in a notebook.
In addition to the use of art direction, the theme is incorporated into this project through a short poem. The player reads a new line of the poem prior to starting each level. The full piece reads:
To see as the child does is to see not with eyes, but with imagination.
To the open mind, even a toy can become a house of horror.
Our happiness becomes almost tangible, but so do our fears.
Reality deceives us, and we become both our own hero and foe.
We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.
